As a part of my ongoing quest, I talked to my dad this evening. My grandfather bought the Stevens 940D and my dad's Remington Automaster at the same time 44 years ago (around 1964), when my dad was 16.
That still doesn't have any bearing on when the gun itself was manufactured, but it is still cool. My dad got his first gun when he turned 13 (that's when Greek boys become men, in case you didn't know.) His granddad said "if you can hit the bottlecap at 25 paces, this .22 rifle is yours." He barely nicked it. His mother wasn't particularly amused. Now I find out that he got his first shotgun when he was 16, to go hunting with his dad... that's pretty cool. That kinda makes me mad, since I never got a gun when I was a teenager. My mom wouldn't even let me have a BB gun.
Anyway, Savage (owner of the Stevens name) does not offer any information on their older models of guns since they are under different management and they are (rightfully) afraid of nasty lawsuits. I'm not sure why they can't at least offer a chart of when different guns were made. All they offer is a way to contact a historian who can find information about your gun for a fee. Bah.
Since the gun doesn't have many markings, I figured I take it apart and see if I could find anything else. I couldn't get the fore-end to come off after I took the screw out. It just wouldn't budge, and I was afraid to force it since I know it would be nearly impossible to replace. My wife came into the garage and saw me struggling, at which point she reached over, grabbed it, and yanked it off. My heart stopped for a second when I heard the *crack* sound. Then I looked at it and realized there was just a fancy latch thing that held the fore-end in place (the screw is just backup.) So it was supposed to just be yanked off. *sigh* Sometimes it just takes someone less mechanically inclined to figure out a mechanical problem. Sometimes it just takes brute force. Anyway, there are some other markings, but no serial numbers. If I have a chance, I'll post pictures.
