Here is a thought provoking article by Stephen Jay Gould titled "Evolution as Fact and Theory".
I'm always impressed by Gould's ability to step back from the crazed back-and-forth battles in a heated debate, and explain the very root of the issue in terms that in a scientific sense are both accurate and precise. Instead of directly arguing for evolutionism or against creationism, he simply explains the nature of the argument. Yet while he is defining the battle, he deftly destroys the the ability of the creationist to make their case. You can boil his argument down to the question: "How can you even compare natural selection to intelligent design when the former is a valid scientific theory and the latter is not?" Really, this is all just another intellectual sucker punch in the evolution-vs-creation slug-fest that has been going on since Darwin first published. Unfortunately, those who get to decide on the matter (the under-educated and emotion-driven) won't understand what Gould is saying here. People may use a term like "theory" loosely, but in fact it is a very tightly defined principle of the scientific method.
This popular spoof of intelligent design demonstrates some of Gould's arguments in a slightly more amusing way.
