I've been wanting to get into kayak fishing for a long time now... it is extremely popular around Tampa Bay, and for good reason.
I'm wondering if it is time to trade the boat in for some kayaks.
Personally, I think the biggest advantage of a fishing kayak is that it is easier to take out at a moment's notice. My boat requires an hour of "getting crap together", followed by waiting in line at the boat ramp, hopefully finding a place to park, and finally bringing it home for an hour of putting stuff away, cleaning the boat, and flushing the motor. That's when everything runs smoothly. With a kayak, I could just throw it on top of the jeep and put it in the water anywhere, stay out as long as I want to, regardless of the tide, then just come home and toss the kayak in the back yard.
It seems like I never get my boat out... mostly because it is a pain in the butt to take it out. Sure, I can get around faster, but there are few places I can take my boat that I can't take a kayak, and lots of places I could take a kayak where I couldn't take a boat. The only advantage my boat seems to have is that it holds more people (which comes in handy) and I can take it up to the scalloping grounds (which would be harder on a kayak.)
This guy certainly has me thinking about it more... |
