According to the Obama Campaign presser on guns and sportsmen: As a long-time resident and elected official of Chicago, Barack Obama has seen the impact of fully automatic
weapons in the hands of criminals. No. No he hasn't.
Real, honest, fully-automatic weapons have been strictly regulated since 1934, and are rarely ever used in violent crime. He's either stupid and confusing "fully automatic" with "scary looking", or he's just repeating VPC and Brady Campaign talking points.
In either case, he isn't someone I will trust to protect my Second Amendment rights.
The most common gun used in any violent crime is a cheap handgun. Cheap handguns are also, as it turns out, among the most popular tools for self defense. Even scary-looking rifles, which Obama confuses for "fully automatic" guns that "belong on foreign battlefields" are used in crimes so rarely as to be statistically insignificant. Thus, Senator Obama supports making permanent the expired federal Assault Weapon Ban. Because, he says, "Assault Weapons" (also known as guns with scary cosmetic features) aren't used by hunters.
The Supreme Court of the United States of America just ruled that the Second Amendment, which last time I read it doesn't mention hunting, has nothing to do with (get this) hunting. Obama does not believe that these common sense measures would roll back the Second Amendment. No, and banning typewriters wouldn't roll back the First Amendment either. But good luck trying.
Finally: While he believes that guns must be kept from criminals, the mentally incompetent, and others who may pose a threat, he also believes that the rights of legitimate hunters and other law-abiding Americans should be protected, including the right to purchase, own, transport, and use guns for the purposes of hunting and target shooting. Nowhere does it mention the right to self defense, which is without a doubt part of the Second Amendment. The presser is about his supposed support for sportsmen, but he fails to mention that he has historically favored bans on both legitimate hunting firearms and most common hunting ammo. Obama believes "compromise" means us giving up rights and receiving nothing in return. He believes a Second Amendment "middle ground" can be found where it only applies to hunters. Bullshit. |
