I read (somewhere) earlier today that Ron Paul endorsed the whack-job candidate from the Constitution Party, Chuck Baldwin. I kinda snickered about the irrelevancy of it all, but this post over at Volokh's place explains why its not just sad, but kinda scary.
I like Ron Paul. I do. He was always too extreme to be a serious contender for the White House, but his voice has got a lot of people thinking. He got a lot of libertarian-leaning people riled up. Now, I'm sorry to say that with this endorsement, everyone who put him down for associating with the lunatic fringe has been vindicated. Chuck Baldwin really is friggin' bonkers. I know an endorsement doesn't equate to an endorsement of all of his views, but surely Dr. Paul knows enough about Baldwin to make a good decision. |
