Question: "What is the waiting period to receive a florida ccw permit"
Answer: There is no "waiting period" per se.
However, FL statutes 790.06 states that the Dept. of Agriculture has 90 days to either issue a license, deny the license, or contact you for further information. Generally, if there are no problems with your application, you should receive your license somewhere between one and three months.
There are a few common things that slow down license issuance:
If your fingerprint card is smudged, they will try contacting you (by US Mail, or telephone or both) to get the issue resolved. If you fail to respond within the required time period, the application will either be denied, or they will attempt to verify your background without them. If they try to run a background check without prints, there is a much higher probability that it will take longer, especially if you have a common name. In some places, you can alleviate this problem altogether by getting your fingerprints scanned electronically. Some sheriff's departments have this capability.
A crime that could possibly affect your right to own a firearm was found in your background, but with no final disposition. If that is the case, you will be required to prove you are legally allowed to own firearms, and are not legally disqualified from receiving a concealed weapons permit. For instance, if the case was dismissed or expunged, but the electronic record is not up to date, you will be required to send the Dept. of Agriculture a copy of the final disposition proving your eligibility. Once again, if you fail to do this within the given time period, the application will be denied and you will have to start over.
Any problem with your application (incomplete or incorrectly filled-out sections) will also result in a delay. If you fill out your application during a concealed weapon class (such as the ones offered at most gun shows) they will walk you through the application process and tell you precisely how to answer each question. I highly recommend the class for that reason.
The Florida Dept. of Agriculture and Consumer Services will do everything in their power to get your license to you quickly, but you have to make sure they get 100% correct information first. Even then, the fingerprint-based background check can slow things down since that is controlled by the Federal government, not the state. You should also keep in mind that the Florida CWP is in high demand, and some months are busier than others. |
