Normally I don't think there is every a legitimate excuse for "emergency legislation". Anything that has to be passed "right now" would probably benefit from being forced to wait a few weeks. After a "cooling off period", most "emergency" laws tend to look foolish. Consider the recent Bailout bill, the Patriot act, and various other legislation giving more power to the executive branch.
In this election, Florida will once again be contested. A few thousand votes from convicted felons can throw the entire state's vote counts into question, which could result in another Al-Gore-esque debacle. This might be one of the few instances where I'd like to see stricter laws aimed curbing voter fraud. I suggest punishment of precisely four years in prison without parole, starting on January 20th, for those found guilty.
Update:
Actually the law exists, but the punishment is "no more than 5 years."
I like my 4-year punishment better. |
