Question: "is a law enforcement officer exempt from the 3 day waiting period to buy a firearm in florida?"
Answer: Florida Statutes 790.0655 does not provide an exemption for law enforcement officers. It does, however, provide an exemption for trading in another handgun, and for purchases by Florida CWP holders. This law is mandated by Article I, Section 8 of the Florida Constitution, which requires the 3-day waiting period for handgun purchases.
If you are a law enforcement officer, you should have no problem acquiring a concealed weapon permit. I also seem to remember that LEOs don't have to do the fingerprints or background check. They are also not required pay the background check fees to get their CWP, as long as they have current LE certs from the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission. LEOs still must pay application fees, however.
The moral of the story: get a CWP. They are easy to obtain if you have a clean background. They are relatively inexpensive. In fact, the licensing period was just extended from 5 to 7 years, so they are now an even better value. |
