Bitter has been posting all of her Thanksgiving plans and recipes, so I thought I'd take a moment to mention the fact that I just picked up our TurDucHen. Mmmm. Meat stuffed inside meat stuffed inside meat. How they hell can you beat that? (Aside from turbaconducken of course...) We've never made it before, but I'm excited about it.
The rest of the menu will mostly be the standard fare: mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, stuffing, veggies, salad. The one thing we'll have that doesn't quite fit on that list is spanikopita.
It might sound odd, but Thanksgiving feels really strange for me without Greek food. See, Yiayia was always in charge of Thanksgiving dinner, and that meant besides having a tray of olives and feta cheese, we would always have spanikopita, tiropita, and a Greek(ish) salad. Being Greek, she also made wayyyyy too much food, including at least 5 types of meat. But she would also do that if you were stopping over to have lunch.
Now, this will be the second year in a row I've spent away from Morgantown (last year we were in Phoenix with my sister-in-law's new husband and his family.) So, even though I am once again missing out on some of my cherished traditions, I'd have a hard time sitting down at the table this Thursday without something wrapped in filo.
(Good news: even though I won't be able to have dinner at my Yiayia's house this year, my mother-in-law is coming down to visit, and her spanikopita is good enough that you could almost mistake her for being Greek.) |
