Sam points us to this AP article that will undoubtedly make you slap your forehead.
Apparently, some Amish folks aren't getting proper building permits, and are not following building codes set forth by local ordinance. Ya know, those ordinances that supposedly make you safer because the government knows better?
I'm appalled. The people bringing the legal action should spend a week in the pillary being whipped silly by everyone else who is disgusted by their actions. This goes beyond religious freedom, although that is the primary basis for fighting these cases. This is also about property rights and privacy rights.
Ignore for a moment that an Amish-built house is probably constructed more soundly than anything a bureaucrat could design or require. There is nothing I can think of which make this kind of legal harassment OK. Nothing. Nobody benefits from it, except the petty tyrant sitting in the county government office tapping his fingers together in the style of Montgomery Burns, and whispering "excellent". |
