As Robb mentioned, sporting clays is fun. I've shot trap, five-stand, and outback-bubba-skeet, but I've never shot a sporting clays course. I have to say it is certainly more interesting than trap.
I also humped a bunch of rifles to the range to make sure they all still work. I haven't shot a rifle in way too long. I wanted to shoot the Gun Blog Rifles winter match, but Tenoroc (don't visit their website, it is virus-ified) doesn't allow standing or prone. They have a no-blue-sky rifle range. It is a nice range for bench-rest shooting at 100 yards (sighting in deer rifles), but that's about it.
My SKS ran perfect as always, but it is shooting a little high (at 50 yards, which is expected) and about 6 inches to the right. I need to get a front sight windage adjustment tool to fix that.
I shot my muzzle loader for the first time ever. Smokey, but fun. Robb got to shoot it too, but I still got to clean it (yuck.) For a cheap ($50) blackpowder gun, I would feel comfortable hunting with it (after a little more practice.)
Now, the bad... my Mosin Nagant M44 was splitting cases. We were shooting Robb's milsurp Bulgarian copper-washed steel cases. His rifle ate 'em up fine, but they occasionally split near the neck in mine. I've never had that problem with brass, so I might try and see if I can still shoot brass cartridges.
Here's the picture:

From left to right: Normal case (shot in my rifle), split case (also from my rifle), and fresh round. All of the cases that split (4 or 5 I think) split the same exact way.
Any thoughts on this? Could it be a headspace issue, or is the neck of the chamber worn? Could it just be that my rifle doesn't like Robb's ammo? I have another Mosin Nagant coming in the mail in a week or two, so I won't be entirely devestated if my M44 becomes a wall-hanger.
Update:
Robb has video. I was in charge of operating the video camera when he was shooting the muzzle loader, but I suffered a major technology FAIL (didn't push the button.) Let's just say you missed an exciting moment when I scream at Robb not to shoot while I put away the open container of FFG that is literally a foot away from a percussion cap under a cocked hammer. |
