Our local Crime Stoppers program is looking for information about this crime: The unknown suspect, wearing a Halloween mask, walked into the pharmacy and fired a shot from a handgun into the ceiling. The suspect then jumped over the front counter and demanded that the clerk open the register. There were at least 6-8 customers in the store at this time, some at the front counter as well. As the clerk was complying and opening the register, the suspect shot him twice. The suspect took the cash and fled the store. This happened a little over a month ago, about 20 minutes from my home, in an area of town I frequent.
This type of crime is not uncommon. Similar stories of criminals getting what they want and still pulling the trigger have also been in the news recently in other parts of the Tamp Bay area.
I don't ever intend to "just give them what they want" during a robbery. The vast majority of people committing armed robberies are doing it for drug money. That means they are either currently high, or in sore need of a fix. Either way they are unpredictable. Cooperating can, and often does, lead to getting shot, just as much as fighting.
Having immediate access to a gun increases my chances of survival. |
