Budding gunsmith Sailorcurt is about done with his "building an AR-15 lower" series. The only thing I'd add to his notes is that a lower receiver vice block is very handy. Some of the assembly steps require three hands (or at least very dexterous fingers) otherwise. I made my block out of a strip of scrap MDF cut to fit in the magazine well. It was cheap, and it works. It isn't as solid as the "real" ones you can get from Brownells, but it really doesn't need to be for assembly. Were I disassembling a lower, I might want something that fit a little more snug. |
