Coincidentally I did the same today and found much the same at the bigbox close to my house. I'm not much of a conspiracy theorist but it does seem strange that ammo has virtually disappeared from store shelves and other vendors. I bought some online in January and still haven't received it. Has gun ownership increased so much as to strip the supply?
I'm finding the same problem, both locally and mailorder. Trying to get 7.62x39 or even .45 ACP is getting more and more difficult, and expensive. I remember two years ago, I could get a box of either for under $5. Now they are both $12-18, depending on what you're shooting.
I think the reason for the shortage is simple. People are afraid ammo will be less available and more expensive in the future. That leads a lot of people to buy as much as they can find. Other people see a perceived shortage and race to grab what's left.
I think we'll see a return to "normal" when all is said and done, although I don't expect prices to be as low as they were. That is simply a market force.
