Funny story, actually.
My wife and I were driving down State Road 580 towards Dunedin to check out a new pizza joint we heard about. After crossing the bridge into Safety Harbor, we pulled up to the stoplight which put us right next to a police facility. It is mostly obscured by dense Florida vegetation, but I always assumed it was a police facility because the parking lot is full of cop cars and I saw no signs advertising donuts for sale...
I've driven past this place nearly every day for the last two and a half years. I see cop cars pulling in, and cop cars pulling out.
Today though, as I waited at the stoplight, I hear "BANGBANGBANG! BANGBANGBANGBANGBANG!" Then what sounds like a crowded gun range that just went hot.
It had to be gunfire, because why would cops be setting off firecrackers? Beth looked at me with wide eyes and asked, "should we call the cops?" Followed by a brief pause, wherein she realized that the cops definitely knew about whatever was going on already, and then, "and make sure they're OK?" I was a little uneasy at this point, because I was boxed in by other cars at the stoplight, and had absolutely no clue why there was so much gunfire happening just beyond the trees to my right.
As the light turned green, I heard a lot more gunfire... which got me thinking. Bad Guy busting in to the police station scenario: he'd certainly be thoroughly ventilated by now. What other scenarios would put a high-volume gun fight in this sleepy northeast corner of Pinellas County? What's the deal?
On a hunch, at the next stop light I whipped out my handy-dandy iPhone, fired up Google Earth, zoomed in, and caught my breath.
Seems there's a friggin' police gun range less than 2 miles from my house. I'm still trying to figure out how that completely escaped my notice until today. |
