I'm bringing home a baby bumble bee... Comment

Except I'm not unless I get it inspected first. It is illegal in the state of Tennessee. And besides, my mommy probably wouldn't be so proud of me anyways. I mean, it's just a freaking bee...

    On assault bees:

44-15-108. Sale or movement of bees. —
    (a) No bees may be sold, offered for sale, moved, or transported, shipped or delivered within the state, unless they have been inspected by an appropriate official of the state and certified to be apparently free of infectious or contagious regulated bee diseases and pests in accordance with rules and regulations promulgated under this chapter
    (b) All persons desiring to move bees, hives, slumgums, used beekeeping equipment or appliances into the state must apply to the department for a permit. The application shall be accompanied by a certificate of health certifying that all bees, hives, slumgums, used beekeeping equipment or appliances have been inspected by an authorized official within thirty (30) days prior to transportation into Tennessee, and that the bees, hives, slumgums, used beekeeping equipment or appliances were found apparently free from any regulated diseases or pest.
    [Acts 1995, ch. 402, § 9; T.C.A. § 44-15-208.]

Lol. Did you know that if you harvest 7 lobsters in a day in Florida that it is a felony? Also tripping a horse for entertainment is a felony. And selling cat pelts. The list goes on and on.

I should publish a book called "There Ought To Be A Law..."

. . . Okay, it's official. Government regulation has jumped the shark.

With the serious illness's that bees can carry it's good practice to do this. I Don't think that the gubmint should be involved though. I won't even buy used woodenware (hives) anymore because they can still be highly infectious. Southern states may also have inadvertantly received a queen bee from an African strain ...

Not to defend the notion that there are way too many stupid laws out there, but this one actually makes sense.

Worldwide, Honey Bee populations have fallen dramatically in the last 6-10 years. Nobody knows why for certain, but the most legitimate theory is something called Colony Collapse Disorder in which the Bees leave the hive one day and die out in the field for reasons unknown. This is significant because Bees pollinate something like 1/3 of the world's agricultural output. All of these crops will die without Bees.

Theories run the gamut from unlikely things like cell phone radiation, to science fiction like global warming, to more reasonable explanations like mites, microbes, or viruses which are spread within colonies by infected bees, causing them all to get sick and die. Since they don't die in the hive, it's hard to pinpoint.

It's actually quite common for states to require various health certifications (proof of vaccination, negative tests for contagious diseases, etc) for animals that are exhibited at county fairs and the like. It's not surprising that bees are treated the same way.
