Sorry I haven't been blogging that much. Gun-blogging has dropped off to practically nil. I haven't even been keeping up with the one-blog-a-day rule. Ah well. I think I have good excuses. Life has been hectic, and at times sad.
My grandmother passed away last weekend, so I had to deal with the planning and traveling and such. My grandfather, thankfully, chose to keep everything low-key. My family had a rare chance to get together for the weekend and reminisce, which I believe is precisely what my grandmother would have wanted.
It was strange for me sitting through a memorial service in a Baptist church. I haven't even stepped into a protestant church in years, aside for my father-in-law's Methodist wedding. Since I've been more deeply immersed in the Orthodox church (recently taking on the roles of reader and member of the choir) I've also been studying a lot more. I never really considered just how far modern western evangelical neo-protestants have strayed from the ancient church. The experience of the western christian (both Catholic and Protestant) doesn't even seem to translate in any meaningful way to the experience of the eastern church. I am beginning to understand why many protestants find Orthodox services to be completely foreign.
What else...
I've been job hunting. I haven't been satisfied with my current job. It isn't that the job itself is that bad... it just seems so inconsequential. I have a comfy, quiet desk, with a big window and an unbelievable view. It is always quiet because I work behind a locked door with access limited to only a handful of people. But the work I have been doing often borders on pointless. When you are on a team of software engineers spending a year developing an application that will only be used by 6 or 7 people, you begin to question the point of what you are doing. There is no room for whatsoever for promotion where I currently sit, because I am a subcontractor writing low-visibility software.
Good news... I might have successfully landed a pretty good job. The good thing about the position is that it doesn't require me to relocate. The bad thing is I will probably have even less time to blog. Of course, if the position is anything like what was described to me, my few-and-far-between blogs ought to be much more interesting.
...
I also haven't been able to bring myself to blog much about gun rights and politics. I have not stopped thinking about what is going on in the country. I just find it remarkably depressing. Here in Tampa (and elsewhere across the country), there has been some kerffuffling at recent town hall meetings. The sad thing is, Rep. Castor just wanted to go preach her socialist crap to a socialist choir. A bunch of American patriots showing up to express their displeasure doesn't affect her views and her willingness to sell out our future to a union thugocracy. She simply doesn't care to discuss her views with people who don't already agree with her. I truly hope this growing social discontent has gotten people thinking a little more, but I'm getting jaded. Frankly, the people who Castor and her ilk rely on for votes aren't the type to actually think deeply about what is best for the country.
Looking at what is going on in national and even state politics, I wonder what the hell has happened to my country. I'm not that old, but I am old enough to remember a deep pride in American greatness and individual sovereignty. That pride has all but evaporated from the public discourse in the last few decades. People are looking to the government for solutions for everything. Once people have completely lost the will to deal with problems outside of government, then liberty will dissipate quickly. I don't even know how you combat the loss of something so vitally important to our survival as a free nation.
Things will continue to be relatively quiet here at West By God. Maybe my new job will be the jolt I need to break this bout of depression, and I can get back to being a fist-shaking demagogue wannabe in my quiet little corner of cyberspace. |
