I'm not a "believer" or a "denier" of Anthropogenic Global Cooling Global Warming Climate Change. I'm just a skeptic. Anyone who isn't a skeptic is clearly more interested in the religion of anthropogenic climate change rather than the actual science. Science requires skepticism, so the only scientists I trust are skeptics. Duh.
That being said, based on the research that has been done, the earth seems to be getting warmer. There is some compelling evidence that the activities of human beings have some effect on the global climate. Some of these studies are "good science". More than a few have also been shoddy, outrageous, and pseudo-scientific attempts to "prove" the "facts" of global climate change. For instance, Al Gore's Nobel prize winning PowerPoint presentation/movie, which was based primarily on now-debunked research, yet which still sees airtime on cable TV. The people who push their bogus politics-driven science are charlatans who ought to be shunned by the rest of the scientific community, plain and simple. Even scientists who agree with Al Gore ought to be critical of the politicization of scientific discovery.
However, there are scientists out there who are doing good research. Even many scientists who are "true believers" still do good, valid research. For instance, there's a group at Rutgers using aquatic robots to collect temperature info from otherwise hard-to-reach spots. This is extremely important information collection which will undoubtedly increase the accuracy of future climate models. I'm glad they are doing it. Collecting information using verifiable techniques is good science.
However, it makes my ass twitch when I see a supposed journalist call this robo-fish-thermometer a "weapon against climate change". A WEAPON!!! That has got to be the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Obviously the people who are deploying these robots encourage this kind of talk. Buzz helps win grants.
But seriously, folks. Cut it out. It is a goddamn yellow swimmy thermometer thing, not a "weapon". |
