Can't post any pictures yet. We'll see in the future...
But here are my observations thus far. First of all, everyone in uniform carries a gun. It doesn't matter if you are a Private or a General. It doesn't matter if you are eating breakfast or sitting at your desk. Enlisted carry M16s, Officers and some NCOs carry M9s. I've only seen a few M4 carbines, strangely enough. I though that was the "norm", instead of the M16. I've also seen a handful of soldiers who are unlucky enough to get a SAW. (I say unlucky, because they have to carry it EVERYWHERE, ALWAYS. Those suckers get heavy after a while.)
I've seen every kind of tacticool optic/laser/flashlight/grip/bipod/rail-mounted-acc essory you can imagine attached to rifles here. Mostly though, people have good quality optics (Trijicon or EOTech) and a lot of folks have lasers.
Shoulder holsters are the norm for carrying M9s. I've seen nearly every brand (and off-brand) of holster imaginable. Some guys carry fine leather custom rigs, and other carry in cheapo nylon holsters. I've also noticed among the few people who don't carry in a shoulder rig, they tend to be either some fancy molle/velcro/whizbang-doodad tacticool thigh rig, or just a BLACKHAWK! Serpa on the hip.
Very few American contractors are authorized to have a sidearm, but there are a lot of TCN security guards. For instance, the Ugandans who guard a lot of different locations around base all carry plain-jane AK-47s. They all tend to have such serious looks on their faces which says, "give me an excuse to kill you." But they are all really friendly if you actually bother to talk to them.
Oh, yeah, and the Phalanx. Dude! They tested one out the other day... sucker is loud as heck. Doesn't sound like a gun at all. I'd say something like, "I would hate to be on the wrong end of that thing", but you would never know if you were. |
