I'm getting sick and tired of politicians and the media incorrectly assigning fear-inducing terminology where it does not belong. Today, since I'm in that mood, I'll focus on gun-related stuff, but I think you'll agree that this happens whenever a politician wants to frighten us (I could go into Global Warming, for instance.) Anyway, back to the issue at hand...
Here are some of the mis-used terms that just piss me off:
-"Cop Killer" bullets (really hard or really soft or really big or really small bullets)
-"Armor Piercing" (anything more powerful than a .22)
-"Assault Weapons" (anything big or scary looking)
-"Sniper Rifle" (anything with a scope on it)
-"Saturday Night Special" (anything small or inexpensive)
-...the list goes on
The latest one is the incorrect use of the phrase "Weapon of Mass Destruction". Look at the definitions returned by a google search on the term.
I don't see how a semi-automatic AK-47 or an Uzi qualify. Yes, guns are made to kill. But the last time I checked, a legal firearm can kill one thing at a time. I don't care if you are anti-gun, you should know better than to try bullshit like this.
Even ignoring those definitions, the wording kinda implies that a WMD will indiscriminately destroy a lot of stuff (or people) by activating it once. Even the scariest belt-fed automatic rifle can't claim that.
Robb agrees with the sentiment, I believe... So how do we get the word out? Something like this might help. |
