Friday night, we put in around 6:30, and headed offshore from John's Pass. The moon was near full, and the skies were cloudy, although by around midnight the clouds were gone and it was beautiful. The seas were pretty calm once we got offshore. We hit a few spots between 30 and 45 miles WNW of John's Pass, where we were able to find good bottom. We brought home a cooler full of BIG mangrove snappers. We also caught a bunch of undersized red grouper and 15 3/4 inch american red snapper. There were also quite a few vermilions, who stole a lot of our bait, and at one point we had to move because the sharks wouldn't leave us along. My shoulders are still sore from dragging 3+ foot sharks up from 100 feet down. We got back in around 5am.
Everything was hitting sardines, but the big mangroves (and some of the sharks) were caught on live pinfish.
Not a huge number of fish, but the mangroves we caught were all "goozers".
