A recent shooting just down the road from my house was determined to be self defense. Now, let me tell you why the shooter was an idiot...
In a previous entry, I laid out some tactical/strategic rules for self defense: Avoid danger; Mitigate trouble; Pay attention; Be prepared; Fight to live; Remain calm.
Auclair started a fight in the bar. Bad choice. Plus, booze never goes with good defensive tactics. That is the exact opposite of rule 1. He should have left when things escalated. He got his gun from his car, but he could have left instead. There goes rule 2. If he was too drunk to drive, he was certainly too drunk to safely handle a firearm. The last four rules would have been unnecessary if he hadn't royally screwed up the first two. I'll also argue that he broke rule 5. I say that because he fired a warning shot into the air. Warning shots are generally a bad idea, especially in a populated area. If you have drawn your firearm, do not threaten to use it. Use it until there is no longer a threat.
This shooting was determined to be self defense, and I believe it was. However, it wasn't good. The shooter made some terrible mistakes. Florida's "stand-your-ground" law gives you the right to defend yourself without retreating. Still, there is a difference between standing your ground, and being an idiot.
