    Blog Software Comment
    Gregory Morris, 9/11/07 10:06:40 pm
I'm getting tired of hacking some relatively ugly php code every time I want to add a feature to, or fix a bug in my blog.

I'm thinking it might be time to upgrade. My question is, should I just go the Wordpress route like everyone else? I'm planning on redesigning my website sometime soon (i.e. whenever I have some time) so that might be a good time to just do everything. The thing is, most blogging packages (Wordpress included) have too much crap. I'm a minimalist (see my main index page.) I don't like having all kinds of features that I'll never use, or even know what they are for. I don't like trying to secure software that I'm not intimately familiar with either.

The other issue is migration. I'm gonna have to write lots of sql scripts. My database is pretty much custom, so anything I have will have to be mapped over to the new schema. Most of the stuff should be fairly straight-forward, but I'm still not looking forward to it.

Right now, on the "pro" side of my list, I have:
  • no more hacking ugly php 3 code
  • added useful features like trackbacks
  • better management tools (my entry form is pretty ghetto)
  • better framework for skins, etc.
  • community supported software
  • more wife-friendly

    On the cons:
  • no more "security through obscurity"... i've never relied on that, but I also don't have to worry about zero-day exploits
  • migration will suck
  • new stuff to learn (oh the horror)
  • too many features to keep track of... i abhor bloat
  • no familiarity with the code-base of any other package

Any suggestions? Keep in mind that my sysadmin probably won't be happy if I have to ask him to do anything... so it has to be all user-space. Oh, and it has to be php/mysql.

Can't help you there. If you were able to run .Net & SQLServer (the free edition works fine) I'd suggest Subtext, but I'm biased as I helped write some of it.

I run mine out of my house, and it works damned fine.

That is indeed a viable option, but I would either have to set up a 'doze server at my home and host it myself (roadrunner is good, but not that good) or find a new hosting provider. The thing is, my site gets hosted for free now (I only pay for the domain.) I'm friends with the sysadmin, so if I need permissions fixed, or access to something that isn't there, he usually helps. If I switch to a commercial hosting company, I'd need to get a dedicated box to have that kind of control.

I also don't like using .Net, because I have to recompile and re-deploy any time I make a code change. Granted, for the blog portion of my site, I probably won't be hacking it much since it seems to work pretty well on its own. I suppose I could still do the rest of my site with php/mysql on a 'doze box, but that seems like a lot of work. Plus I prefer having a real honest-to-god shell account I can ssh to.

im a big fan of wordpress, to be completely honest. and my account with network redux allows for ssh access.

Too many people decide to upgrade, and move instead. Leave this here as archives. Start something new. No matter what you do, if you move, you will break every permalink anyone every used to link to your stuff.

I like what the Rottweiler Empire has done. Basically a new blog for every year. If they want to upgrade, they can do it so no links are broken. (Of course they didn't follow their own advice and broke all of the links prior to 2006, when the moved to PHP.

Wow, that's a great point. I'm already planning a multi-poster blog with some friends of mine to move all of my political crap to... we're using wordpress on a different server so it shouldn't affect this blog, except to lighten my load a little.

Maybe I should just start a new one at blog.gregandbeth.com or something.
