I'm getting tired of hacking some relatively ugly php code every time I want to add a feature to, or fix a bug in my blog.
I'm thinking it might be time to upgrade. My question is, should I just go the Wordpress route like everyone else? I'm planning on redesigning my website sometime soon (i.e. whenever I have some time) so that might be a good time to just do everything. The thing is, most blogging packages (Wordpress included) have too much crap. I'm a minimalist (see my main index page.) I don't like having all kinds of features that I'll never use, or even know what they are for. I don't like trying to secure software that I'm not intimately familiar with either.
The other issue is migration. I'm gonna have to write lots of sql scripts. My database is pretty much custom, so anything I have will have to be mapped over to the new schema. Most of the stuff should be fairly straight-forward, but I'm still not looking forward to it.
Right now, on the "pro" side of my list, I have:
no more hacking ugly php 3 code
added useful features like trackbacks
better management tools (my entry form is pretty ghetto)
better framework for skins, etc.
community supported software
more wife-friendly
On the cons:
no more "security through obscurity"... i've never relied on that, but I also don't have to worry about zero-day exploits
migration will suck
new stuff to learn (oh the horror)
too many features to keep track of... i abhor bloat
no familiarity with the code-base of any other package
Any suggestions? Keep in mind that my sysadmin probably won't be happy if I have to ask him to do anything... so it has to be all user-space. Oh, and it has to be php/mysql. |
