    More PSH... Wii Blaster Comment

    Is this article serious?
Parents soiling their trousers over a Nintendo game

Angry parents are in fits over Nintendo's decision to release the peripheral for the family-orientated console. "Great, this is what we need," said one furious parent blogger. "Children with guns learning how to aim and shoot. Then we can sit back and wonder what is happening to our country with kids killing kids."

Yeah, just what we need. Kids playing games that require aiming and pulling a trigger. Because in the grand scheme of things, it is OK to buy a Playstation and use a joystick to simulate murdering cops and prostitutes, so long as you controller isn't gun-shaped.

FYI folks, my very first Nintendo Entertainment System came with a bright orange gun that actually almost looked like a gun. It was used for duck hunt... a game where you shoot at ducks or clays. Those were the days of honest, wholesome games. I grew up playing Duck Hunt, and it certainly didn't turn me into a ravenous murderer.

    Favorite Suzy Soccer-mom quote:
Why don't they enclose an application to the NRA (National Rifle Association) in every box as well?

Hmmmmmmm... ya know, that's a great idea!

Murdering cops and such - with a car! (amongst other things).

Of course, noting cars kill more than guns is just an NRA talking point and therefore can't be used in an argument....

Actually, I have an issue with the violent video games in and of themselves (a long, drawn out post I need to make some day), but could give two (or three if the fiber fairy has visited) shits about the shape of the controller.

The game teaches the art of shooting, a plastic, gun shaped controller has no bearing on teaching the kid *how* to shoot. The problems with today's games is they do not teach the art of when *not* to shoot. Body counts = more points and that's not how the world works.

Yeah, I've never been a fan of violent video games myself (do you consider Zelda or Mario to be violent?) But its a free country. That's up to parents to decide. Regardless, duck hunt isn't a violent video game. The new "chicken shoot" game for the Wii isn't a violent video game. Now, if you use the gun in resident evil, killing zombies... then yeah that's violent. But the shape of the controller has no bearing.

Video games have nothing to do with anything in real life, that's the friggin' point. If you want your children to fear guns, then don't let them even _see_ gun-shaped objects anywhere. If you want them to respect guns, take them to the range and teach them gun safety and marksmanship.

Apparently none of these parents have been in an arcade recently.

One of my favorite stories came from a gunboard a while back. The poster's son was attending a party at a pizza parlor with lots of arcade games. His young son was playing House of the Dead, holding the gun "gangsta" style. When he saw this he admonished the boy, loud enough for one of the mothers attending to hear. She said to him: "You don't let your son play these violent games? I don't allow my children to play them either!" He replied "Sure I let him play. I just don't let him use bad form!" He then finished his admonishment to his son, and got him to hold the gun properly, and with two hands, while the mother in question made like a blowfish.
