    Fred Thompson, Second Amendment Comment
    Gregory Morris, 9/17/07 9:46:22 pm
    From his website:
    Second Amendment

I strongly support the Second Amendment of the Constitution, which protects an individual’s right to keep and bear arms. Gun control is touted as a major crime-control measure. But some of the places with the strictest gun-control laws also have high violent-crime rates. Disarming law-abiding citizens does not prevent crime. The answer to violent crime is smart, effective, and aggressive law enforcement. The real effect of these gun-control measures is to place onerous restrictions on law-abiding citizens who use firearms for such legal activities as self-defense, sport-shooting, hunting, and collecting. I am committed to:

  • Strictly enforcing existing laws and severely punishing violent criminals.
  • Protecting the rights individual Americans enjoy under the Second Amendment.

  • Individual right. Check. The one thing I question is his wording "I strongly support the Second Amendment of the Constitution". A natural right doesn't need his support. But I suppose I'm just picking nits. I take that to mean he supports not letting the government infringe on it.

He's better on guns than any of the MSM candidates. It's true. But it's not exactly the toughest competition to be against Rudy McRomney on gun rights issues. He won't let the government infringe on it...any more. This is fine. I'm not much of a guns voter anyway and my guns tendencies are more focused on the potential necessity of revolution than on hunting/individual self-protection. I do think he would sell out to get votes in certain cases (again, not wholesale like Giuliani or Romney or McCain). But until he begins to name entire departments in government that he has on his chopping block, instead of vague references to inefficiencies in government bureaucracy, he's not my guy. Until he has taxes right, he's not my guy. Until he proves he has the sack to attack the Federal Reserve System, he's not my guy. I'm an economics voter. From economics stems my other voting rationale, but ultimately, I want a candidate who actually knows about economic freedom, who doesn't subscribe to the Keynesian crap our government tries to play on us. Ron Paul is that guy. Plus, I'm convinced by his record in Congress that he can't be bought, that he won't budge just so people like him. He stands firm not just most of the time on the Constitution of the United States of America, but every single time. He favors decentralization, so Florida has more control over its gun laws than the US gov't, so if Taxachussetts wants to make gun bans, they can, but their activism can't affect Florida or West Virginia. He wants to make it so some liberal hippie-dippy gun-abolitionist in California can't force their opinion on someone 3000 miles away, so that old people in Florida can't force huge Social Security taxes on future generations of young people in other states. Can he do everything he wants in a 4 year term? No. But he can use the pulpit granted the presidency to inform the average dumb American. He can, as I have said before, make it tough on Congress. He can communicate like Reagan did, maybe not so eloquently (which is the ultimate reason he is "unelectable"), that "...government IS the problem." Liberty, absolute and complete, not partial and mostly, can resurface in a country which has not known anything even close to it since before Woodrow Wilson and FDR destroyed our Federal Republic. Can the same be said of Thompson? I doubt it. What can be said of Thompson? He comes closer to this than MOST of the rest of the Republican candidates.
Can someone so "radical" as Ron Paul win the presidential election? I hope so. He doesn't have the Obama Girl, or Oprah Winfrey. He doesn't have millions of dollars illegaly procured by a Chinese guy who keeps fleeing the country. He was never a prosecuting attorney on a TV show. He was never a POW in Vietnam, nor was he "there on 9/11" like Giuliani (which, in case you didn't know, 9/11!!!), nor does he have 400 dollar hair and a million dollar smile, but he has one thing: he wants you and I to be free and he means it when he says he wants you and I to be free, every time, without falter.
In my humble opinion, we don't need a defender of the Constitution, of federalism, we need a rabid defender of these. We need one unfraid and unashamed.
Plus, Thompson moves his head around alot when he speaks. Kinda weird, really.

I just use the gun issue to gauge candidates really... it is a very important issue to me, but it indicates more than their ability to woo the NRA voters. Thompson has stated that our rights are God-given, and not granted by the constitution, so that is #1 on my list. My biggest concern, and I know you disagree with me about this, is getting someone into the White House who won't make things worse. We need to push on Congress for real reform. We need to stop being reactionary when it comes to our rights... that's how things got so bad in the first place. We wait until someone threatens us, then come out swinging. Why not make the first move? The biggest problem, of course, is that Americans are complacent... they don't like to move until something directly affects them, and it is too late by then to prevent any damage. Gun control is a perfect example here. The NRA has historically been concerned with teaching people marksmanship and safety. They didn't jump on the politics bandwagon until our rights were already being trashed.

Yeah, Thompson's head-bobbing is great parody-material, but it isn't nearly as annoying as Giuliani's lisp. Or Hillary Clintons existence.

Ron Paul has already gotten a reputation as a nutter, mostly because a lot of his supporters are batshit-crazy "truther" wankjobs. Sure, there are those who recognize his outstanding record in defense of our rights, and his rock-solid conservative economics... but that's not what it takes to win in politics. He needs to state unequivocally that the US government is not to blame for the attacks on 9/11. But he won't do that because he believes our presence in foreign countries somehow made murderers come to my country and kill my fellow citizens.

I want a president who can say, in no uncertain terms, "your culture may only continue to exist so long as it doesn't interfere with mine." Call me a bigot if you want, but it is all about my right to survive and prosper. If Islamic extremists wanna do their wacky shit off in the desert somewhere, it is none of my business. But as soon as they come here and kill people, or cause trade problems on the international scene, they have to be put down. We had troops in Saudi Arabia by the invitation of their government. To say that caused 9/11 is insane. Just because that is the terrorists' reason for attacking us doesn't make it right.
