The article itself is just fine until the author betrays his own ignorance of the Second Amendment with: "Does a private citizen really need an AK-47?" It doesn't matter if a private citizen needs one. The 2A is there to protect our right to own one, as a check on tyrannical government. I wouldn't exactly call gun owners "the core" of America (and I don't mean that negatively), but I'd say they represent America's mainstream. I'd say we are the core of America (no, I won't be endorsing McCain this campaign season) simply because we are the ones guaranteeing the rights of everyone, whether or not they like guns.
Then the author jumps off the deep end and suggests a national gun registry is a good idea. I just don't know how he can square that statement with this one: I suspect it's impossible to keep guns and criminals apart, so any additional laws shouldn't penalize the innocent in order to hurt the unreachable. |
