This should get interesting.
If the kid did it, he's an idiot. I have friends that went to high school at WW, and I can vouch for the fact that it isn't on the "nice side" of town... i.e. the rich kids don't go to that school.
But... just because there may be problems in that school, and there may even be a problem with this particular kid, I just don't see how they can press charges like this on the word of another student. It seems to me that without some evidence, this case is bound for failure. Were I a lawyer, the first thing I'd do is motion to drop the case based on the fact that, uh, there is no case. Of course, I'm not a lawyer, and I don't even know all the facts. Regardless, until someone says they can prove this kid had a gun in school, he's innocent. Of course, as a school administrator, I'd watch him like a hawk from here on out, but I just don't see what else you can do.
My guess is this is post-VT knee-jerkiness (ala post-Columbine knee-jerkiness) and the cops are just playing a little game called CYA. If they do nothing and something bad happens, they get blamed. If something bad happens now or in the near future, they can say, "oh, we go after people like this the best we can, seeeeeeee?"
