Wow. Ya know, I don't think that anyone in CS really has that whole sense of accomplishment for completing a year of grad school, like Monica is always talking about. It could be (and likely is) that law school is a lot more intense. But for most of us hacker-folk, its just another year of taking classes, learning new stuff, and moving forward.
I don't even think that most of the CS grad students here think in terms of "oh, i'll finish in N years"... its more like they accidently forgot to stop coming to class after they graduated. That isn't true for all of them, exactly, but I know some of my friends here aren't really sure what exists outside of academia. I can't say that necessarily holds true for me, because I do know whats out there, but I intend to hide at the top of the engineering school mountain until I either get pulled out, or pushed out.
Of course, as I say this, I am taking a summer off, and just working full time. I already miss being in school, and I've only been off for less than a month. It seems to me that until I am able to find a job that is stimulating and fulfilling, I'll always miss school. At school I learn new things, practice them a bit, and then move on to even newer things... constantly building.
At work, I do the same thing day in, day out. It isn't like data entry, or accounting, but I haven't had the chance to tackle anything interesting or exciting. I write plenty of code, but its all crap... the most complicated things I do I learned about in high school. I'm in charge of managing a big project now. I get to tell people what to do sometimes. I have important business meetings, and people pick up my lunch tab with a corporate American Express card. I have to tuck in my shirt. I have to sound professional. I can't click my tongue ring against my teeth when I talk to clients.
It seems to me that while other people are counting down the years until they are done, I'm ignoring the fact that sometime I'll probably have to... gulp... graduate. |
