Wow. Ya know, I don't think that anyone in CS really has that whole sense of accomplishment for completing a year of grad school, like Monica is always talking about. It could be (and likely is) that law school is a lot more intense. But for most of us hacker-folk, its just another year of taking classes, learning new stuff, and moving forward.

I don't even think that most of the CS grad students here think in terms of "oh, i'll finish in N years"... its more like they accidently forgot to stop coming to class after they graduated. That isn't true for all of them, exactly, but I know some of my friends here aren't really sure what exists outside of academia. I can't say that necessarily holds true for me, because I do know whats out there, but I intend to hide at the top of the engineering school mountain until I either get pulled out, or pushed out.

Of course, as I say this, I am taking a summer off, and just working full time. I already miss being in school, and I've only been off for less than a month. It seems to me that until I am able to find a job that is stimulating and fulfilling, I'll always miss school. At school I learn new things, practice them a bit, and then move on to even newer things... constantly building.

At work, I do the same thing day in, day out. It isn't like data entry, or accounting, but I haven't had the chance to tackle anything interesting or exciting. I write plenty of code, but its all crap... the most complicated things I do I learned about in high school. I'm in charge of managing a big project now. I get to tell people what to do sometimes. I have important business meetings, and people pick up my lunch tab with a corporate American Express card. I have to tuck in my shirt. I have to sound professional. I can't click my tongue ring against my teeth when I talk to clients.

It seems to me that while other people are counting down the years until they are done, I'm ignoring the fact that sometime I'll probably have to... gulp... graduate.

Word. School is the place to be.

You have a good job. You are smart. You have a wife who loves you. People trust you. You are blessed enough to go to school in the first place. Appreciate what you have. And know that it can be enough if you let it.

yeah, academia is safe. i'm not counting years until i graduate, but i think there is a difference between knowing when that will be and the date being indefinite. it's weird to think that we've all had a few jobs here and there, but i've been in school for 17 of my 23 years. it's hard to know, and hard to look forward to, something other than school.

by the way, i like the new layout.

also, see my comment on nicole's blog. call me a hypocrite. i love everything, sorry.

Glad you like it. I'm trying to fix everything up a bit. I still need to add a cookie to remember name/email in this form. I also need to tweak the image gallery a bit to make it prettier/more user friendly. I also appreciate suggestions :)

    yes! remember my name!

    the gallery is cool, though.

i agree. the new layout is quite nice.

also, i want to see if the comments do a nesty tree thing or not.
    Re: BuzzWords
    Gregory Morris, 6/4/04 11:31:20 am
yeah, i wanted to do the nesty tree thing... The blog app i'm using now is very incomplete... i just started using it because it was small, simple, and relatively modular. It didn't even come with an interface for adding actual blog entries....

Needless to say I've hacked it up a bit, but there are still new features I need to add. Like (as i said) cookies to save your name/email... nested tree for the comments definitely (although the current db structure doesn't have a 'parentOf' element, so i'd have to add that, along with the logic.) I'd also like to add an actual interface for adding/editing blog entries... right now I am using a relatively kludged version of phpmyedit, which works, but its ugly as Margaret Thatcher.

The nesty thing isn't essential, but the fact that each comment has its own "reply" button raises that kind of expectation.

This may just be a firefox issue, but the name and email fields don't clear themselves when they get the keyboard/mouse focus. That's probably an HTML issue, I guess?

What is the app written in? I take it PHP?

    Gregory Morris, 6/4/04 1:34:45 pm
php/mysql, just like the rest of my life. You are right about expecting nested comments... that would make sense. As far as the input field, thats actually a javascript issue. I just have to say 'onfocus="formelement.value=\'\'"'
but that would take a lot of work *g*
    Re: BuzzWords
    todd., 6/4/04 1:52:26 pm
yeah, if i were thinking i'd have said javascript. the two are just one big mess in my mind, though. i mean, you can specify the onfocus attribute as a field in the html tag for the box, right?
    Re: BuzzWords
    Gregory Morris, 6/5/04 11:07:07 am
yep... thats how it works... you've got me feeling bad now, because the more time i spend discussing it, the more obvious it is that i should have fixed it by now.
