    Instead of buying each other a bunch of crap we don't need, my wife thought this would make a good present for us/from us. I'm inclined to agree.

    It will be here by this weekend too! Wheeee!

    The Canon Rebel XTI is a beginner-level SLR, but a damn fine one. I've heard the Nikon D-series are better, but their similarly spec'd models are nowhere close to the price I got the Canon for. If I end up loving this camera, my old Pentax K1000 and Pentax Asahi might end up collecting dust in a box in the back of the closet.

    I'm a Nikon guy, but it's simply because once you dive into the world of SLRs, you must stick with the brand of lenses you buy. Both have great camera lines.

    Here is my first piece of advice - screw the price of the camera, that thing is throwaway. Spend the most amount of money you possibly can on your lenses. Get all glass. Buy the expensive ones. The camera is just a light tight box. The clarity of your images come from the lenses themselves. A cheap lens will give you soft pictures.

    Oh, I know... My problem is I have good 4 Pentax screw-mount lenses, 1 decent Pentax bayonet-mount... I didn't much like the Pentax DSLR, not that it would have mattered, because the screw-mount lenses aren't happy with DSLRs even with the adapter. In fact, my screw-mount lenses don't work with my K1000 really because I lose the internal light meter when I use the adapter, so I have to use my cheapo handheld light meter which sucks, especially for anything other than still, non-dynamic shots. I don't even think older bayonet-mount lenses work right with the Pentax DSLR.

    My old Asahi takes some pretty badass pictures, but I just can't justify using film anymore, except on special projects.

    Anyway, as soon as I can round up the cash, I'll get some better lenses, but with my other expensive hobbies, who knows when that will be? The POS that comes with the Canon will do for now, and whenever I (or my wife) decides it is time to "get serious", we'll get more lenses. Until then, "quality" pictures will have to be done with film.

    I just got the exact same camera (in silver) last week. I'm very happy with the quality even with the default lens. I'm just using it for slides though. Due to the size, I use my compact digital for 'the field' as it fits nicely in my pocket.
