Looking at this reciprocity map, I've always found it strange that South Carolina has remained gray for so long. Anyone know why? The SC Law Enforcement Division apparently decides on reciprocity. Usually, when there is a bureaucrat involved, the list grows slowly if at all. Sometimes it is legal issues, sometimes it just isn't high enough priority. I know WV recently fixed their problem, opening up reciprocity to many more of the civilized states, and making it easier to add the rest. However, reciprocity lists are far too complicated to manage, and pointless anyway, with the way that RTC has been catching on nation-wide.
Apparently, (I wasn't aware until just now) there is a bill in their legislature to do away with the whole "reciprocity" nonsense, and just accept out-of-state licenses. I don't know how their legislature operates, but the last action on the bill was in May, so I don't know if the bill is even still alive. For all the people screaming about federal nation-wide reciprocity, it seems to me that this would be a great way to start. How many other states do this? Anyone?
Normally, I wouldn't particularly care about the carry laws of a state I rarely visit, except that if I ever decide to drive back home to WV, I'll have to stop at the GA/SC border to put my firearm in the glove box, then as soon as I hit NC, I can put it back on. Doesn't that seem a little strange? |
