Just about every gun blog has discussed their feelings on the DOJ's recently filed amicus brief. Some tear into the Bush administration while others question how terrible it really is.
I figure I might as well weigh in. It is my belief that the DOJ has no say in this. We are talking about a government agency. Of course they are in favor of having more control and power. The Bush administration has been more authoritarian, by and large, than even the worst "for the greater good" democrats. It scares me when you have to choose between authoritarian neo-cons, and nanny-state libs. Why aren't people demanding that their candidates relinquish power?
I worry that this brief was filed so that the Bush administration can utter "we support gun control" out of one side of its mouth while lying, "we support an individual right" out of the other. The way the media is covering it already, that seems to be precisely the case. Taking DC's side, but only "kinda sorta", makes no sense to me whatsoever.
I think, best case, the DOJ should have supported the individual right, as well as agreeing that it should be enforced as such. The term "individual right" is meaningless how they define it. In the worst case, they should have kept their nose out of it entirely. I understand that SCOTUS has every right to ignore any "friend" who foist themselves upon the case. If I were them, however, I would take anything sent to me, unsolicited, by the executive branch and marked "return to sender" on it. |
