Sara Fain asks:"The parks have been safe for 25 years. Why are we looking to change the rule?" I'll simply reply that "No Guns Allowed" doesn't mean guns can't be brought into parks, and also, "Guns Allowed" doesn't mean "Not Safe". The rule needs changed because it infringes on an individual's right to self defense without any actual increase in safety.
The Washington debate sharply contrasts with that in Tallahassee, where there was little dissent as the state repealed what until two years ago were strong bans on guns, loaded or unloaded, on most wild lands in Florida It is simply amazing what politicians will do to stay in power. Ya know, like respecting the wishes of their constituency.
As of 2006, there was no state-level ban on weapons in national forests and state parks. The Florida FWC recently updated their rules to match (the new rules go into effect on July 1.) Anti-gun groups (such as the one-man FCSGV) have raised a stink about the change, but it is generally agreed that the rules were enacted to limit poaching. Poaching is a rare problem now, but it is still illegal and anti-poaching laws will still be enforced. In addition, the new rules primarily effect individuals who are licensed to carry concealed weapons. Since concealable weapons are generally not used by poachers, there doesn't seem to be a problem from that perspective.
"It's one of those [issues] we felt we couldn't win, and we have other issues we had to concentrate on," Hayhoe said. Notice that old Arthur Hayhoe, (executive director and sole member of FCSGV) is referring to himself as "we" again.
Note what the chief ranger at Biscayne National Park has to say. "I'm kind of biased because I'm always armed," Carod said. "I take a gun everywhere, just to drop my child off at school." Oh, good, he likes preserving our right to carry guns... Oh, but wait, he thinks our guns should be locked up. Sounds like "Only One" syndrome to me.
