    Define Voluntary... Comment

    If you decide to stay in a locked room, are you free?

    The fact is, it isn't as simple as "forceful" or "voluntary". Taxes are "forceful" to an individual, but also "collectively voluntary" via our republican form of government. It is true that the government takes money from me and gives it to someone else. It is also true that taxes are determined by elected officials. Taxation without representation no longer exists.

    The problem I have isn't with the "forceful" nature of taxation, but rather with the fact that Americans keep electing socialist assholes who raise taxes in the name of "wealth redistribution". Anyone who espouses that philosophy on taxes should be immediately deported.

    Unless you're a resident of DC or somebody under the age of 18, and neither of those things are big issues from me, but it's worth thinking about.

    I have no sympathy for those in DC... they chose to live in that odd little district. The under 18 crowd gains a bit of sympathy from me. I'd really like to seem them be free of income, Social Security, and Medicare taxes for no other reason than we'd finally have a segment of the population that would remember a time when they didn't pay those taxes.

    As for DC residents... it was never really meant to be a place where people live, so there are obviously going to be problems. They do have some representation, although it may not equate to what a state of the union receives. I also agree it is one's choice to live in the district...

    I've personally been filing income tax returns since I was in 6th grade, so I understand the problem with taxing the 18-and-under crowd... however both legislators and courts continually decide that until you turn 18, you do not have ALL of the civil rights guaranteed to citizens by the constitution. Part of the reason for this is because until a person turns 18, they are still normally in the care of an adult. I guess it is assumed that the adult, who can make all kinds of decision for the child, also "represents" them at the polls.

    I agree it would be nice to eliminate income tax, etc. on those under the age of 18, but I just don't see it happening.
