Both before and after the debate was over my wife and I listened to some of the commentary on Fox News, but every now and then I'd switch it over to MSNBC to see how long we could stand it before flipping it back. Most of the time my wife started squealing and smacked me after about 30 seconds. A while after the debate ended, we couldn't take the Fox commentary either, and turned the TV off. It was a fun game, but I threw up in my mouth a few times when Keith Olberman was speaking. Of course, that is my normal reaction to anything he says or does.
There are just a few actual comments about the debate I'd like to make.
First of all, Sarah Palin showed up, with regard to foreign policy. This will anger the "Palin is a dumb hick" liberals whiners. Joe Biden made it clear that he understands foreign policy better than Obama, but he's still wrong on the fundamentals.
Second, Joe Biden said something about "adjusting principal" in addition to adjusting interest rates, with regard to mortgages. Was that a BidenGaffe, or does he really believe in that? If he does, our country is in trouble. Maybe he misspoke?
Third, Palin sounded awkward discussing gay marriage. She and Biden were saying the exact same thing, but she insisted on saying it in a way that would be less "offensive" to her base. It kinda reminded me of John Jackson and Jack Johnson from Futurama.
Fourth, Palin took a few good swings, but there were a few more she ought to have taken. Particularly in shifting the "blame" for our current economic situation from Bush to Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton's Community Reinvestment Act. I did enjoy house she thrashed Biden for continually "looking backwards". I understand the entire premise of their campaign is that McCain would be "another 4 years of Bush", and on some accounts that is correct, but I think Bush-bashing is only going to play well with people who already support Obama.
Fifth, there were a few points in the debate where Palin spoke an entire sentence or two without saying anything. All politicians do that from time-to-time, but it was disconcerting coming from someone who is generally very down-to-earth. Most of the time she rolled right along, but it seems she did freeze up a few times. That's perfectly alright, in my opinion, considering the amount of time she's spent in the national spotlight. She pointed that out too.
Finally, Joe Biden is a raging socialist, and Palin called him out on it. He failed to apologize and excuse himself from the stage, as any self-respecting man would do upon the revelation that he is indeed a freedom-hating Bolshevik. This tells me all I need to know about Biden... not only is he a socialist, but he's doesn't see it as a problem! |
