Senator Byrd went to the hospital yesterday.
I have a very strong feeling that Byrd is on his way out, which will lead inexorably to Gov. Manchin appointing himself to the Senate. This is the best possible outcome. Joe Manchin is a good man, and more importantly, half of Byrd's age.
Senator Byrd, as much of a whacky liberal as he is, has done a lot of good things in the state of West Virginia. Regardless of his politics, he is a brilliant man, and an outstanding statesman. Of late, however, he is barely capable of maintaining composure on the Senate floor. I hope, for his sake that he decides to step down sooner rather than later, and pass the reigns to more capable hands.
