Folks who know me can tell you that I have very strong opinions when it comes to martinis. Although I am generally a scotch drinker, I am rather fond of gin as well, and a good martini is often the only way to begin a good evening.
Lawdog has a good description of a "correct" martini this morning. Although we may differ on the specifics (I do prefer quite a bit less vermouth, and an olive) we certainly agree on the key point: Martinis are made with gin and a little bit of vermouth. Not a lot of vermouth. You may garnish how you please. But it is still just gin and vermouth.
Now, what really makes my ass twitch is when people refer to cocktails as martinis, just because they are served in a martini glass. This is blasphemy, as far as I'm concerned. Even James Bond, who loved his vodka martini (note, it is a vodka martini, not a martini) never ordered a fruity what-the-hell-ever drink and call it a martini.
For future reference, the glass does not make a martini; the gin and vermouth does. Everything else is properly referred to either as a "cocktail" or by the name of the cocktail (which is not allowed to contain the word "martini".)
My recipe for a martini:
-Pour two shots of gin (Sapphire or better, bottom shelf gin is for hobos) into a glass of ice.
-Open a bottle of dry vermouth, and wave the cap or cork dangerously near the glass of ice and gin.
-Replace the cap on your vermouth, and strain the gin into a chilled martini glass.
-Add a big toothpick with one or more olives. -Enjoy.
-Audibly scoff at anyone who orders a chocolate martini, an apple-tini, or anything that vaguely sounds like "martini" and isn't made from gin and vermouth.
Update:
Robb, Uncle, and WeerdBeard have weighed in. Uncle is wrong... Martinis are made with GIN dammit. Robb is right, but doesn't like 'em. Weerd seems to be quite the connoisseur. |
