So life has been pretty boring really... Been taking the new boat out fishing... the ISR softball team is in the playoffs (we won our first game in the first series last night, looking to finish it off tonight.) Last weekend's chili'n'beer post-softball party was a success. Leftover chili (I made a huge pot of it) will be my main staple for the next week or so.
Work is busy. Too much to do and not enough time... so what else is new?
We need to brew beer again soon. Me and Isaac and Isaac have been working on a plan to harvest about 20 gallons from Dunkenbarger creek down at Dolly Sods. The last stout we brewed was made with Little Laurel Creek water, and it was fantastic, so I'm excited about brewing a Dunkenbarger Dunkelweissen. Plus, I need to spend a night or two in the wilderness... too many trips to D.C. and too many nights downtown have left me a over-saturated with civilization.
Here's what we're trying to figure out though... how do you get 20 gallons of water from Dunkenbarger creek back to Morgantown? Last time we just pulled the car up to a creek, and filled up four five-gallon kegs and drove home. The last time we hiked to Dunkenbarger, we took Little Stonecoal Trail up the mountain. That was a tough enough hike without carrying a bunch of soda kegs. So we figure we can hike them down from a little road above the creek, which is closer, but that means we have to hike 4 full kegs back up the trail. Dunkenbarger is about 1000 feet in elevation above Red Creek, over a hike of about 2 miles. If we hike down from above the creek, it is about 2 1/2 miles, and a drop of only 300 feet in elevation. That is probably our best bet... except the terrain is pretty rough at spots, and we will still be carrying about 200lbs between the three of us. If we make it a day trip, that shouldn't be a problem. If we stay overnight, we'll have to go ultra-ultra-light (read: 1 tarp, few granola bars, water filter.) Now we just have to figure out how to carry the kegs (strap to our backs? bring a dolly? air-lift them out? anti-gravity pods?)
