This was a tough call.
The NRA could have elected to not endorse McCain, but it seems like they felt Obama is too much of a danger to the second amendment. Some people will claim this is proof the NRA only cares about the Republican party. Although that claim would be demonstrably false, it still begs the question...
On the one hand, McCain isn't spectacular on gun rights. He has supported us with his vote on a few issues. He has spoken for our side on a few issues. But he still seems to think that the shooter at Virginia Tech got his weapon via the non-existent "gun show loophole". He still panders to a lot of populist nonsense, completely forsaking those of us who believe in individualism. He hasn't really done anything to promote or expand the right to keep and bear arms, that didn't involve joining a group of other "pro-gun" senators.
On the other hand, Obama is a raging socialist who has a history of actively pushing for more gun control. His understanding of the second amendment is at odds with both history, and the Supreme Court. Clearly the worst candidate on the only issue that the NRA cares about.
I am guessing the NRA decided they had to endorse "someone", and the only real choice was McCain.
McCain stands to benefit significantly by this endorsement. The NRA endorsement equals a lot of "free" votes. These votes will be vital in the big, hotly contested states like PA, OH, and FL, of which McCain must win at least two. |
