According to insurance companies, drivers in West Virginia are more likely to hit a deer than just about anywhere else.
There are a lot of deer in the Mountain State. A whole lot. I'm not aware of many whitetail hunters who go home empty handed... and if they do it is because they are a poor shot or they were just waiting for a bigger buck. (Tangent: Down here in Florida, apparently a "trophy" buck is what they would call a "baby" in WV. I just talked to a guy who was excited about a six-point he just took. I had bigger bucks in my back yard when I lived inside the city limits of Morgantown. Anyway...)
Southwest Pennsylvania has a similar problem. If you drive on any road at night, you need to drive slow and keep your eyes open.
The high level of deer collisions is clearly caused by deer over-population. This, in turn causes higher insurance rates.
Now, how do we solve this problem? Thin the herds. Make it cheaper to hunt. Make WV more accessible to out-of-state hunters. Give out more doe tags, and encourage people to harvest them. Encourage more youth hunting (note: the state recently passed legislation making hunters education more common in middle- and high-scools... that should help.) |
