Armed Canadian continues discussion of Tam's thoughts on "arsenals."
Personally, I've gone from not being a gun owner at all to arsenal status in only a few years. Before I moved to Florida, I had access to a lot of guns that I could just borrow, so I only bothered owning a handful. Since I moved down here, the number has more than doubled. I actually just counted them the other day and thought "jeesh, I didn't even know I had that many." And I will still buy more.
What's funny is, among gun owners I know I still have a really small collection. I know some collectors who have more guns of a single model (different years/configurations) than the total number of guns in my collection.
I'd be interested to see the distribution curve... I agree with AC that it isn't likely a flat 3-per-household. I'm guessing most households have an old .22 or 12ga, but among people who hunt, shoot, or collect, you'll be hard-pressed to find a safe with less than 5 guns. What Susie Soccer Mom doesn't often realize is that each gun has a completely different purpose. I'm not gonna hunt with my Glock, I'm not gonna fend off intruders with my .30-06, and I'm not gonna take my 12ga to a bulls-eye shooting event. I also have guns that have historical or heirloom value. They are all capable of shooting, but mostly I just show them off to friends.
Of course, you have to feed all of them. I tend to have at least 300 rounds of 12ga. Heck, my wife and I shot 100 rounds each yesterday. And that's just one type of ammo. Of course I keep ammo for all of my firearms, because without ammo, they are just big heavy sticks (some of which are pointy, in case I do run out of ammo.) Any gun owner will tell you that .22 ammunition comes in bricks of 500 or so rounds. When Wallyworld has a sale, you buy three or four bricks. There's your "thousands of rounds of ammunition" right there.
So, when the local media reports on someone being found with an "arsenal" and "thousands of rounds of ammunition" and other nonsense, consider that it isn't really that uncommon for a gun owner to have a bunch of guns and a bunch of ammo.
Of course, I have a lot of work before I could meet Tam's goal. |
