LTC Allen West is an interesting candidate. He is an honest conservative, who clearly understands military and foreign policy issues. I was listening to him on Bill Bennett's show this morning, and I rather like how he speaks. From what I heard this morning, and what I've seen elsewhere, you will not hear this man speak and walk away confused about what he actually said. You can't say that about many politicians.
What I really found interesting is his stance on the Second Amendment. Of course, every politician at least pays lip service to it, but this is what West has to say: An armed and informed law-abiding citizenry is the best defense against an unjust government and the criminal element created by irresponsible societal benevolence and activist judges. He isn't taking a stance of "agreement" or "support" for the right to keep and bear arms. His statement assumes the right is pre-existing, and he simply explains some of the reasons it is important to contemporary America: namely self defense, and defense against tyranny. |
