    Sarah Brady Comment

If you want an in-depth understanding of the pro-second-amendment perspective, as well as an relatively complete analysis of the Brady Campaign's sophistry, look no further than the comment section of the Brady Campaign blog: Anniversary Musings by Guest Blogger Sarah Brady

It is startling to see a collection of insightful, well-thought comments in one place... particularly on the internet. I guess it takes something as insipid as the Brady Campaign to bring out the most logical minds lurking about the internet.

I'm also surprised to see that she actually responded to some comments. Granted, the comments that could not be logically refuted were simply ignored, and content of her response was primarily fluff. I guess nobody has the time to answer so many good questions, especially since answering them really won't help her campaign at all.

    Greg,
Are you against banning assault weapons (like AK-47s)? I know that some people interpret the 2nd amendment as giving them the right to own machine guns, missiles, and perhaps even nuclear warheads, but how is that a 'good thing' for society? If my neighbor is armed to the teeth, doesn't that infringe on my rights to speak to them freely if I feel threatened? I can (sort of) understand the use of guns in for hunting and whatnot, but is it such a terrible thing that some nut can't go to a gun show and buy a weapon that can kill a bunch of people?

Let me ask you a question. Which of these guns do you want to ban?

    This hunting rifle?
    or
    This assault weapon?

I'll give you a hint: they are the same friggin gun!

I am absolutely against banning any semi-automatic firearms, based on the idea that they look scary. "AK-47s" sold in America are not the same AK-47s used by the Russian military... they are simply semi-automatic rifles, that fire 7.62x39 ammunition. (Actually, the guns pictured above are SKSs, which are not AK-47s, but they do fire the same ammunition.) They are no different from the Remington that somebody uses to hunt deer, except for some cosmetic differences. In fact, most deer rifles are more powerful and more accurate than most of the "scary guns" that the Brady Campaign hates. The term "assault weapon" is a bullshit term invented by the Brady Campaign, et. al., to scare the average citizen.
Automatic weapons (i.e. real assault weapons like M-16s and AK-47s) are already heavily regulated, and nearly impossible to acquire. Nobody commits crimes with automatic weapons, because they are difficult to find, expensive to buy, and you have to undergo a thorough background check (fingerprints, etc.) Criminals like cheap throw-away guns, usually ones that have been stolen.

Having an armed neighbor is not a threat to your freedom of speech... quite the opposite in fact. This pro-gun saying may be a bit cliche, but its true: The Second Amendment protects the First. If you neighbor is a criminal, then he is not legally allowed to have guns anyway, but if your neighbor is a law abiding citizen, why are you concerned that he is well armed? It makes me happy when I find out a friend or neighbor keeps a shotgun under their bed, or carries a concealed pistol, because I know if the sh*t ever hits the fan, they'll be able to defend themselves, and possibly me. In the aftermath of Katrina, there were no police to be found. What were the residents supposed to do when a band of thugs came to take away their only means of survival?

Your argument about keeping guns out of the hands of "nuts" holds little water. First of all, people use baseball bats to attack people just as much as (if not more than) guns, but nobody would dare banning baseball bats. Why would you infringe on my right of self-defense for an ineffective means of preventing crimes? I say ineffective, because criminals, madmen, loonies and nuts can get a gun illegally just as easily as I can get a gun legally. Why not crack down on gun crimes? Impose harsher sentences for trafficking of firearms, and use of firearms in the commission of a crime! You may not know this, but in a lot of criminal proceedings, defendants will plea out of firearms charges entirely, which makes their actual convictions less extreme (i.e. manslaughter instead of manslaughter AND felonious use of a firearm.) If we leaned on prosecutors to push for more firearms convictions, maybe that will keep more criminals off the street for longer periods of time.
