Awesome! I just moved to Florida, and on my drive down here, after crossing the border, I saw one of these billboards. I didn't get a good look at it, so I didn't notice if there was a "Brady Campaign" label on it or not. At the time I wasn't even sure who erected it, the pro-self-defense crowd or the anti-gunners. It turns out that it was the Brady Campaign. Of course, the BC just put these here to try and scare away tourists, in the hopes that FL would change the laws to keep the money flowing in. I seriously doubt the billboards have taken one cent out of the state.
It did make me smile though.
Ok, maybe they should have erected a billboard that says, "The State of Florida, for the most part, respects your right to self-defense."
Or perhaps, "Messy, poorly written, confusing and contradictory laws aside, the people of Florida generally believe you have the right to defend yourself in some situations, but you'd be well informed to talk to an attorney about it first, because there are too many ways a prosecutor with the right jury could totally ruin your life because you protected yourself against a violent criminal."
Read Jon H. Gutmacher's book about the law down here, and you'll see what I mean.
Here is the BC flyer:
Nothing I really disagree with there, except the last sentence about the police and prosecutors... that's kinda um... false. Florida was an early adopter of the Castle Doctrine, and there hasn't been an increase in gun crime, or many occasions of people trying to abuse the new law. Nobody down here is worried about it, except for some far-left scared-of-inanimate-object weenies.
Oh, and while I don't mind the law being called a "Shoot First" law (*g*), I understand the propaganda value of that wording, so I tend to lean towards the correct terminology which is "Castle Doctrine". I'd also be comfortable with "Constitutional Right to Self Defense Assurance Act"... but liberal hippies wouldn't support that one either. Actually, some of my best friends are liberal hippies, and some of them even own guns... so I guess I should be more specific. Perhaps "Ignorant Liberal Hippies". I really need to find the correct term for this particular breed of leftwing nutjobs... I'll keep working on it and get back to you.
