Objective, fair, and simply dripping with journalistic integrity, MSNBC asks and answers the question "Do Guns Still Matter".
They say no, because Obama was elected. Of course, they aren't taking into account the fact that McCain isn't exactly a champion of Second Amendment rights. However, I think it is clear that Obama did everything humanly possible to avoid the issue of gun control. If that doesn't make it clear that the issue is still a losing one for gun-grabbing liberals, then I don't know what does.
In fact, I would argue that one of McCain's biggest blunders was not forcing the issue. I'm sure that McCain historical skirmishes with the NRA were a big reason he kept mostly quiet on that front. However, once he received the NRA endorsement, McCain should have pressed the issue. He didn't though, instead relying on NRA attack ads to recruit gun owners. The really close states, which were key to McCain's election strategy ended up breaking for Obama. States like Ohio, Virginia, and Florida have a large number of gun owners who aren't one-issue voters, but probably could have been swayed had the issue been made more important by the McCain campaign.
Of course, it doesn't help having the mainstream media filtering out any issues that might have hurt Obama. Since they were successful in doing that, they now find themselves free to claim that none of those issues matter anymore. |
