Question: "april camping at assateague island"
Answer: I highly recommend it. Even better is mid-to-late September. In April, it can still be a little chilly, and from time to time you'll see some spring breakers (mostly day-trippers from Ocean City.)
The island is filled with screaming kids all summer long. I know, we used to go every other summer when I was a kid. But early autumn, is still warm, kids are back in school, and it is quiet and beautiful. Plus, trophy stripers tend to be caught around that time of year, if you like fishing.
I recommend the MD State Park at the north end of the island, because the facilities are better than at the National Seashore. I'm also not sure if the camp ground at the National Seashore ever got hot water... if that matters to you, stick with the State Park. Keep in mind that the MD State Park doesn't allow dogs, while the Assateague National Seashore campground does (or at least they did last time I was there.)
I personally wouldn't bring my dog anyway, for a fear of waking up to find a pile of freshly killed ponies waiting outside my tent. Cocker spaniels can be wily like that. |
