Or rather Caleb is right about Sebastian being right.
The "gunshine state" voted for the most anti-gun presidential candidate in history, despite my prediction to the contrary. I maintain this blog, which gets a fair number of visitors. I write my state legislators and congress critters when the need arises. But only real way for gun owners to wield power in Congress is by making sure we only elect people who will support us. That means being more directly involved during elections. I need to do more. So do you.
As Caleb said, an army of 2.4 million activists would be unstoppable. Hell, for that matter an army of half a million activists would be unstoppable.
If Mike Vanderboegh and his merry 3%-ers are (supposedly) willing to shed blood in the name of liberty, surely it wouldn't be a far stretch for them to knock on doors, write letters, make phone calls, etc. I'm sure a lot of them do. I'm sure a lot of them also spend time wailing and gnashing their teeth. But I guarantee you that entirety of that 3% aren't actively campaigning, or the GOA would be its own political party, and in control of congress.
So what's the problem? Why isn't there an army of pro-gun activists marching together? Well, that's just it... they don't march together. We don't march together. The "shall not be infringed" types won't accept anything but everything. There is no signification unity to be found in that politically impractical flavor of extremism.
"150 years ago this wouldn't have been considered extreme." No, but it is today. There are political realities that don't go away just because you feel morally superior.
"Extremism in defense of Liberty is no vice." Indeed. But blinding and crippling yourself isn't useful for this fight. You need to see and be able to use all of the tools and options. Not just the reset button.
To be victorious in American politics, your campaign simply must have a superior number of voices. Frankly, the "3%" canard only goes so far. You don't have to have more people "on your side", you have to have more people willing to pound the pavement, spend the money, and speak in a unified voice.
It should never be hard to defeat the anti-gun lobby. They are small, weak, underfunded, morally corrupt and intellectually bankrupt. Their only power lies in obfuscation of the truth, and the willingness of a majority of people to forsake logic in favor of emotion. That is why our voice has to be loud enough that theirs cannot even be heard. The only way that is going to happen is if more people choose to be active.
Update:
And Uncle is right too. Except about birds not being douchebags. Some birds are definitely douchebags. |
