We Win Again.
This will really just bring national parks in line with existing state and federal laws. The new rule will allow people to carry a concealed weapon in a national park only if they are allowed to in the rest of the state.
The good news is that I can finally visit a national park without having to stop at the entrance, unholster, unload, and securely store my side arm in the trunk.
I've always felt that national parks are one of the safest places you can be, aside from the occasional unruly bear. Of course, crime does happen anywhere there are people. And there are those bears. And it is far less likely you'll be able to get help from law enforcement or rangers immediately when you need it.
But for me it is mostly a matter of convenience. It doesn't make any sense for me to have to go through that ridiculous disarming ritual just because I'm entering into a place that is supposedly safe enough that you wouldn't need a gun. I might be coming from or going to somewhere that I need to carry a gun.
This is a good rule change. Statistics clearly show that concealed weapons licensees are by far more law-abiding than the population as a whole. There may be initial fears that allowing guns into national parks will result in them being used to shoot at wildlife, but I think those fears will be put to rest when those fears go unfulfilled. The same people who oppose this new rule are the people who screamed that there would be "blood in the streets" and "wild west shootouts" when states started allowing for concealed carry. Clearly that didn't happen. I am certain the same will hold true in national parks.
