A little over a month ago, I wrote about taking a newbie to the trap range.
Well, he also wanted to try some rifles and handguns, so we took him over to Shoot Straight for a lesson on different guns. Unfortunately, it was crowded, and their measly 3 rifle lanes were booked solid, so we were only able to shoot the .22 rifle and some handguns. You can tell from the pictures that he wasn't disappointed (sorry about the quality... I only had my phone.)
After a refresher on the 4 rules (plus my special 5th rule*) and an overview of how each firearm functions, I let him have a go. He shot the .22 rifle very well, and later commented on how much easier rifles are to shoot accurately. I'm always glad to see people, especially newbies, being observant when like that we're shooting. After a few magazines through the .22, I let him shoot my Taurus 85 and Beth's Glock 19. He nearly made the mistake of gripping the Glock with his weak side hand behind the slide. Good thing I told him about Rule Five! He shot both well after I showed him how to properly grip them, but definitely preferred the revolver for its simplicity.
Before we left, he made sure to pocket a few pieces of spent brass in each of the calibers we shot, and he also kept his targets. At the end of our range time, he said how excited and happy he was about shooting, and that now he's considering getting himself a revolver after he has a little more time to practice.
* - When I take a newbie shooting, I always make sure they know the Four Rules, but I also tell them my own "newbie" Rule Five. Whenever they are on the firing line, gun in hand, if I say "stop" or tap them on the shoulder, they are to freeze and remove their finger from the trigger. There are two reasons I make this rule. One is safety. If they are doing something wrong, I don't want them to swing around and sweep half the range with the muzzle of their gun. Two is so I can correct technique to help them shoot better. |
