Sebastian is reporting that Attorney General Eric Holder's comments may have played a part in getting the Senate to vote on overturning DC's draconian gun laws.
If that is true, fantastic... but that isn't his biggest gift to us. First of all, Nancy Pelosi (of all people) is now on the record using NRA's line. I know she doesn't really mean it because she's really a vile bitch, but she still said it, and that makes me grin. I know she's probably cursing at Holder right now. The truth is, she never took another AWB off the table, but she was planning on keeping it quiet for now, because it isn't a good time to try and pass such a useless and unconstitutional law. Her style is to wait until there's a good crisis she can exploit.
More importantly than Pelosi being made uncomfortable, these comments demonstrate how stupid Eric Holder is politically. Think about this for a moment... He basically said, "we want to abridge the rights of law abiding Americans in order to theoretically help a corrupt Mexican government fight a war they don't seem interested in winning." Does anyone else here think that maybe he played that one poorly? Conservative pundits who don't give a shit about the Second Amendment should still be having a field day with this one. Holder is now on the record as willing to sell out his own nation's liberty for something that clearly won't help Mexico anyway.
In many ways, this is better than when Joe Biden inevitably says something stupid, because Holder won't be able to write it off as a slip of the tongue. He's framed the AWB argument in the poorest way imaginable, instead of using the tried-and-true method of waiting for a tragedy to push more gun control legislation. |
