A recent publication meant for Missouri law enforcement officials to help them identify militia members was recently retracted (I'd link it, but you are a big boy or girl and can look it up easily yourself). The big concern among many (mostly gun-toting, drug-using, prostitute-hugging libertarians/constitutionalists) is that profiling of anyone favoring third parties in elections may be members of militias or paramilitary groups is an abberation.
While I share this concern (although I do not tote guns, do drugs or hug prostitutes), another interesting concern is the use of militia with a negative connotation.
From Dictionary.com:
mi⋅li⋅tia /mɪˈlɪʃə/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [mi-lish-uh] Show IPA
–noun 1. a body of citizens enrolled for military service, and called out periodically for drill but serving full time only in emergencies.
2. a body of citizen soldiers as distinguished from professional soldiers.
3. all able-bodied males considered by law eligible for military service.
4. a body of citizens organized in a paramilitary group and typically regarding themselves as defenders of individual rights against the presumed interference of the federal government.
Have we strayed so far from our past as a nation that the word militia is automatically considered a terrible thing? I do not presuppose all militias are honorable entities, fighting for liberty and justice. But at the same time, to fully presuppose the opposite and to use a word with such negative distortion is absurd. Militias were fundamental in freeing us from the British Monarch. Militias were called upon to fight in many wars and to protect local communities throughout the histories of many nations. Am I missing something? Did I totally miss the point in time when we said that any form of protection outside of the formal government is a bad thing? |
